Catholic New Media Advent Calendar with Russ Rentler and Judy Ferguson

Today we have 2 musical Advent surprises for your edification and enjoyment. Russ Rentler is a Catholic revert, singer-songwriter, doctor, and missionary.  You can find his apologetics  blogs, videocasts, music and more at Crossed the Tiber.  Today Russ offers us his song, Window in Heaven.

Judy Ferguson is a fellow Canadian, convert, retired teacher, and my facebook friend.  She has a reflection on her favorite contemporary Christmas song.

Mary, Did You Know…?

I love this song – a relatively recent Christmas song written by Mark Lowry in 1984 when Mark was asked to write a Christmas program for his church. The music was written by Buddy Greene several years later and it was first recorded in 1992 by Michael English, then by others.

The circumstances surrounding the conception and birth of  Jesus were unique, to say the least! Imagine a young girl, a virgin soon to be married, being told, by an angel no less,:

{“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,  and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?”
And the angel said to her in reply, “The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.} NAB

Mary, did you know all the miracles your Son would perform? Did you know when you told Him that they had run out of wine at the wedding feast that He would change the water which was used for ritual cleansing into wine? And the deeper meaning of this?

And after that He would perform many more miracles, each of which signified much more than what the people actually saw? And that He would indeed be the sacrificial lamb, sacrificed for the remission of our sins?

When you sat in the most unlikely and uncomfortable place for the Son of God to be born, did you look down at this precious baby boy and say once again, “May it be done to me according to Your word.”

Join us tomorrow for more reflections produced by great Catholic New Media personalities as we journey through the advent.
